2008 Malaysian Election: What have we done!?

I have to admit that I’m beginning to regret my decision to vote for DAP (the only opposition party in my constituency). I’m also beginning to regret spending so much time supporting our political opposition parties here in this blog and out there in the field along with my Muslim NGO group.

Like many other concerned Malaysians, I was also engulfed with my frustrations and disappointments with Barisan Nasional that we had overlooked what was obvious and we never did saw it coming. :-(

PAS, DAP & PKR hailed themselves as the People’s Coalition party (Barisan Rakyat) but we never did realized then that this so called alliance did not have a strong leader. The People’s Coalition party is not even a legal entity like Barisan Nasional!

The absence of an elected leader that unites all three political opposition parties has created chaos and havoc among the opposition parties just a few days after the recent election. DAP was the first to show off their supremacy by playing ‘Chingay’ with the Sultan and Regent of Perak. PKR was next, playing ‘Konda-kondi’ with PAS and DAP. :-(

What next, Barisan Rakyat!?

If we look at the existing chemistry of our political opposition parties, there is no way in hell that they can sit down, talk and choose a leader that can lead all of them. That is the blunt ugly truth!

DAP has always been accused of playing with sensitive issues regarding Bumi Rights and Islam. PAS meanwhile is glorifying and upholding Islam and PKR on the other hand is playing with their fragile multi-racial trump card.

Do you really think DAP and PAS can strike a deal and compromise in the next 10 years?

Do you think PKR can stay afloat if issues of religion and Bumi rights rocked their boat in the next 10 years?

I’m sorry Malaysia, I may have done something awfully wrong to you. Forgive me, Malaysia… :-(

Have patience. As the saying goes "Rome was not built in one day". There will always be teething problems when any change occurs all the more when it is such a huge change. Look at the bright side of it, the MBs for Kedah, Penang and Selangor have been sworn in without any fiasco and it looks like the Perak situation has been settled. I am told that DSAI was in Ipoh today to sort things out.

Seems like you don't have much faith, my friend. BN have done many wrongs in the pass as well and we Malaysians gave them 50 years! Believe in BR, they are new but they are not stupid...they will know what to do.

How easy and fast that we have forgotten of the ills and wrongs of BN and we all expect the new people to be working out like a Swiss watch. Let be frank .... they as well as us have not expected this to happen so quick but it happened. They need time to adjust to the new reality and probably need to work out many things. I am quite sure Tan Sri Khalid has never in his wildest dream though of becoming an MB and the same for many new YBs. Dont be too quick to judge them so soon.

Dear Peter…

I’m not going to publish your comments because you are not only challenging me but also other concerned Muslims to produce proof of Anti-Islamic policies in DAP. Of course such policies are not there in plain sight but many people have third eyes and can see much more than others.

DAP was not established yesterday, Peter. They have been around for a very long time. People have videos and audio recordings of past DAP campaign speeches; some goes back as far as 1970s. Even though such campaign speeches were delivered in Cantonese, Mandarin and even Tamil, that doesn’t mean other races didn’t know what they are all about.

We can either make a mess out of this or sweep it under the carpet. Look, it is still too early to tell what DAP is up to at the moment. I’m going to bear patience through gritted teeth for this time around. Let us pretend that these are just accusations for the time being.

By the way Peter, you first need to understand what Anti-Islam is all about. You may think that Islam is all about prayers, fasting or paying alms but the truth is Islam is much more than that.

I’m sorry my friend if this post disturbed your feelings in any way. It is unfortunate that I have to respond in such way but what Mr. Lim Kit Siang did recently (referring to Perak’s incident) really pissed a lot of Muslims. As an experienced politician, he should know that going against PAS is like going against Islam and all Muslims in Malaysia. He should have been more careful. He should have used diplomacy and discuss things behind closed doors with PAS and PKR.

I have nothing against you, Peter. I have a lot of respect for you since you are an open minded person with lots of heart. Please forgive me if I have offended you in any way.

Hi Saidul,

BTW I had joined many PAS (which you admire greatly) members in the Rally for clean and fair elections, so would you call me an Islamophobic?

Please do me a favor. Please define anti-Malay and Islamophobia for me so I can try to judge for myself if I and DAP falls into those categories.

Hi Saidul,

Sorry for posting so many comments, but your post and comments have touched a raw nerve in me. Don't know if you will ban me from your blog or not.

Tell me about the secret meeting of Selangor PAS with UMNO. Would that not arouse fear in non-Muslim that after bloggers and NGOs and other initiative cooperated with PAS to try to get rid of BN, that one day, after helping them win some seats, they will not team up with UMNO to form the government and impose things upon citizens of Malaysia which they do not want to accept?

Don't you remember how arrogant PAS became after the major win in the election following Reformasi when they took over the Opposition leader post? How different was that with the behavior of some of the DAP members?

Do remember that people join political parties for different reasons. Some wants to help bring a better Malaysia. Others are there for position and money, etc. Why do you think there is so much infighting in some political parties.

Lim Guan Eng got jailed for trying to help a Malay girl in Malacca when UMNO abandoned her. Ronnie Liu got his skull cracked by the FRU for trying to help some Malay squaters. I witness those grateful Malay squaters visit the Selangor DAP HQ while helping DAP in their preparations for the election.

BTW I consider myself as non-partisan which means if you can show me that DAP is not a good political party to help, I too will abandon them.

Saidul, excellent answer. This is the type of Malay we should have in Malaysia, all Malays!

I also sent my regret to DAP even though I am a long term supporter to them, since my grandpa time. :) Yes, I am labeled as "hard core DAP supporter".

I don't bother about DAP's past history. If they have been biased, let it be history. Today's DAP should review their past and learned the lesson. What's important is in front of them. Are they able to take this opportunity to do the right thing?

LKS is guilty of being careless. I guess he has learned the lesson. If he hasn't, then more punishment must be given.

We should not feel regret for our decision to vote DAP. We actually gave ourselves an opportunity to change. This is a very important step. But all this is just a beginning. There will be more to "change" from all sides: you, me, DAP, PKR, PAS, UMNO etc. So long as we are part of the change process, we are going to make Malaysia a better place then before.

During BN time, we are not "required" to be part of the country's development. I am not sure if you feel yourself being a part of the Malaysian before GE12. To me... no. I am Chinese. I was considered as second class citizen. The feeling is like a visitor to Singapore. See?

Thing has changed now. Thanks to all people including you. I felt more like a Malaysian and I think there will be more people contributing to the nation building. Even those that had left the country. They may even come back.

Let's help the new team to run the country the way we like it. Look, they response to us positively. Isn't that good?

Just my two cents.

Hi there Peter...

Don't worry, I'm not going to ban you. You have the right to say whatever you want to say and I really appreciate your thoughts on the matter.

It saddens me though to see that you took it personally, as if I was attacking you or something. :-(

Okay, let me cover your long comments.

I know you have joined BERSIH in their mass rally last year. We both have. If you can remember correctly, the mass rally was not about Islam. It was about fighting for justice in our election system. It was a universal value and of course every concerned Malaysians got together even though it was led by PAS.

You were right. PAS do have their faults too but for us good Muslims, we do not have any other choice. We are not only concerned about our nation but also our religion. Other than PAS, there is nobody else that can really protect our religion. Don’t mention UMNO la, you know their story.

Look, DAP is not a rotten apple. I can understand that they are representing some parts of our community. But DAP has to remember that 60.4% of Malaysians are Muslims. That’s a huge majority and DAP should be more sensitive to Muslims’ feelings. PAS worked together hand in hand with them in the recent general election. I don’t think it is right for DAP to withdrew their support for PAS (momentarily) in that incident in Perak.

As for the Anti-Islam definition, perhaps you can see what the definition really means to Muslims from the link that I have provided. I have an outgoing link in that post and it is pretty disturbing. Perhaps you can comment on the outgoing link. Tell me whether or not Muslims in Malaysia should be concerned with the ‘threats’ mentioned in the outgoing link.

I can see that you are not happy with the way I picture DAP. As a peace offering, I will edit what is offensive and make it more acceptable. I hope you will be happy with that. Give me 15 minutes to do that.

By the way Peter, you really spoiled my mood to enjoy lots of ‘durians’ this evening. It is there in my kitchen just waiting to be ripped apart but I think I will do it tomorrow morning. :-)

Hi Saidul,

Most of my numerous comments had not been approved and I do not know if this one will be approved. However, just want to let you know I have made a similar post What have I done? Did I helped create a Malaysian Islamic state? and would like to invite you to leave your comments if you can spare the time. I assure you your comments, as long as they are not seditious, inflammatory, etc., will be approved.

The post is a bit long, but the part you may be interested in is probably near the bottom of the post. Letting you know just in case you are very busy.

Looking forward to your response.

Hi Saidul,

Thanks for approving my earlier comment. However, unfortunately I did not get a response from you nor your enlightened Muslim NGO friends except for one Anonymous comment which I don't think came from you or your NGO, but probably from Yahoo group Beritamalaysia "What have I done? Did I help set up an Islamic state for Malaysia?

I have also received private email responses and waiting for the right time to do a follow up post.

Hi Saidul,

If comments in this post keeps piling up, this post will get as famous (or infamous?) as YB Lim Kit Siang's post which talked about boycotting the Perak's swearing in ceremony of the MB. That drew lots of comments, majority throwing bricks at poor YB Lim. Wonder if our police will charge those burgers (sounds like something nice to eat) would get charged for attempted murder like those poor 32? Hindraf demonstrators who were charged for attempted murder on one single policeman. That policeman must be a pretty tough policeman for needing 30 plus "gangsters" to try to murder him.

BTW congrats for attracting so many comments. I would like that. It means traffic (visitors) and for me, the more the merrier. Hoping you will overtake Lim Kit Siang.

Maybe I should try something like that too. Publish a very controversial post and get visitors so worked up they keep posting comments after comments. I would like that too for I like to get feedback so I know my status.

Darn (not bad word although 4 alphabets). Sloppy blogger (me not Saidul). Made a comment earlier here which should be at DAP Perak in deep Sh*t (Sh*t also not bad word although also 4 "alphabets"). Or is it my senile mind? Whatever, if I did wrongly commented wrongly here, hope Saidul will be kind enough to transfer it to the proper post. On second thought, better not, because if he copy-paste, then the HTML will be lost. Better hope (or pray?) he approve it, then I myself can transfer it there, then delete my own lousy comment. I think we can delete our own comment? Think so but not 100% sure.

I'm just curious as to what "protection" you think Islam needs in Malaysia. Currently, it's pretty much the state religion, and people who attempt to convert from Islam to another religion have been punished.

Hi Saidul,

You are getting almost as famous as YB Lim Kit Siang who got lots of "bricks" thrown at him for calling for boycott of Perak's swearing in of the MB. You probably is just as busy as him as so far, we only have a single response from you. Now I think most of us who commented here will like to hear what you have to say about our comments, good or bad. But if you only kindly approve our comments, it is going to be pretty lonely here, more like a monologue than a dialogue.

Still waiting for your post or comment about the boycott in Terengganu.

Hope you don't get pissed off by this persistent pest.
