Malaysian Malay teenagers… Do we really understand them?

Yes, that’s right… Let’s talk about our Malaysian Malay (Melayu) teenagers today, the infamous brats of Malaysia. They have driven everybody nuts; parents especially! They have done everything! They have done every sort of wrongdoings that they can think of; we have seen and heard all about them in the newspapers and in our national TV channels. Yeah, you’re right… They are the living epitome of that ‘Malaysia Boleh’ (Malaysia Can) spirit all right.

The government realized that our young Malaysians especially Malaysian Malay teenagers are getting wilder and wilder, controlling and disciplining them is becoming harder and harder. They hit the panic button last few years and introduced ‘Khidmat Negara’ (National Service), a compulsory national service program for all Malaysian teenagers. Frankly, I don’t think a short 3 months of training and isolation would do much good for our Malaysian teenagers. The government is only wasting the public’s fund on that silly program. You know that very well, aren’t you? 

I really hate talking about our Malaysian Malay teenagers. They are a big disgrace! Has anyone noticed that they look more like some copycat ‘Mat Salehs’ (Westerners) rather than Malaysian Malays? Their hairs are colored, noses and ears pierced and drilled with holes here and there. What the hell! They don’t look like Malaysian Malays, certainly far from looking like some exemplary young Muslims. Our stupid reality TV shows are not helping them either, they are destroying them further! How can they encourage young children to sing and dance like idiots on TV?

To all Malaysian Malays, please snap out of it! Stop hallucinating! We are not some westerners, we are born Muslims! We have our Islamic values; we have our own Islamic way of life! We have a religion, remember? Why should we leave all that behind and embrace the corrupting ways of the western world?

If you really care about your teenage children, send them to some local Islamic camps when they are on their school holidays. Better still; let the whole family go there! It would be a total Islamic cleansing clinic for the whole family. Make it as a regular yearly activity!

An interesting read. I'm a British guy living in Malaysia, and I do agree with some of your views here. However, I think you shouldn't blame the youngsters entirely for the faults that you find in them. All teenagers today, in every country in the world, are behaving exactly the same as Malay youth. I think we should blame "popular culture" that is perpetuated by the "glamorous" American lifestyles championed by the Paris Hiltons and the Lindsay Lohans. And then there's (bad) pop music, (the horrible) MTV, bad movies without moral themes, and negligent parents. I've travelled in many countries in all continents, and I see a pattern emerging of teens being heavily influenced by today's popular culture.
