Malaysian government officials VS Malaysian bloggers… The event is a blessing in disguise for the Malaysian Malays?

I don’t know about you but I do noticed that this current war of words between some of our government officials and some of our local political bloggers has some kind of a blessing in disguise for the Malaysian Malays (Melayu).

Nowadays, every coffee shops and ‘mamak’ restaurants (Indian restaurant) in Malaysia have people talking about our local bloggers and their blogs. I attended several Malaysian Malay matrimonial ceremonies (kenduri kahwin) located far from the city and deep in ‘kampungs’ (Malaysian villages) in the past few weeks and I was pleasantly surprised to hear those village folks talking about some or our well known Malaysian bloggers! Amazing!

Like any other good Special Branch secret agents, I just played dumb and strained my ears to listen to their discussions. After much listening here and there, I can safely conclude that the publicity generated by our current war of words between you-know-who and you-know-who has benefited the Malaysian Malays in three particular ways:
  1. The Malaysian Malays now knew more about what is really going on in the country. All the while, their source of information was nothing more than the government-controlled news media but now they have another alternative. Malaysian blogs!
  2. The Malaysian Malays are now more inclined towards reading news and information dished out by alternative newsprint media such as Harakah and online alternative news media such as HarakahDaily and MalaysiaKini. They would go and check every single news splashed on mainstream news media against the alternative news media. Looks like the Malaysian Malays today are becoming more aware of the things going on around them. Finally they have the intelligence to do some comparison. :-)
  3. The Malaysian Malays also realized much to their shock that the non-Muslims in Malaysia did not really like their community and their religion, Islam. They were surprised to see that the non-Muslims in Malaysia openly criticized and condemned Islam from some Malaysian blogs that they were reading. Yes, they have now discovered the ugly side of Malaysians. Malaysians of all shapes and sizes would easily flash smiles at each other but only Allah Knows what they were thinking deep down inside their hearts. :-(
I’m not going to comment anything on the first two but I would like to say something on the third. The Malaysian Malays in general could not really blame the non-Muslims for disliking us. We could not really blame them for even hating us Muslims. Some of our non-Muslims in Malaysia even knew more about Islam than some of the Malaysian Malay Muslims. Out of their curiosity, they have bought books on Islam and tried as much as they can to learn and understand more about Islam. They even read our Holy Quran to learn more about Islam! When they are done with their readings, they suddenly found that the Malaysian Malays in general are not really practicing Islam as what has been taught in Islam. Hence, we are actually giving bad impressions to the non-Muslims. It is all due to our very own faults. Our ignorance has once again got the better of us. Some of our well known Ulamas and Muftis have spoken about this but unfortunately their calls for all Malaysian Muslims to go back to Islamic basics and keep the remembrance of Allah close to their hearts were suppressed by the powers that be. :-(

Look at us Malaysian Muslims today. Do we really have unity among us? Do we really have that strong Islamic brotherhood in our Malaysian Muslim community especially in the Malaysian Malay Muslim community? Take a look at what Tun Dr Mahathir has done lately. Hitting on fellow Muslims here and there as if the whole world is all about this puny land we called Malaysia. Even if those people that he has been screaming at are doing something wrong and he wants to correct things and make it better, there are far better and more decent ways to do that according to Islam. What he has done so far is nothing other than splitting the Malaysian Malay Muslims even further. Not to mention that his action alone indirectly gave Malaysian Muslims some bad impressions. If we are not united, if we are divided right in the middle, do you know who the hell would benefit from it? :-(

With all due respect Tun Dr Mahathir, are you really trying to help us or are you trying to do the opposite?

Yeah, the Malaysian Malay Muslims in general would only display their brotherhood maybe couple of times in a year and that happens only on major Islamic festivities. When those festivities are over, the Malaysian Malay Muslims would go back to their nests somewhere and that sense of brotherhood would mysteriously go missing. Everybody would go back to their old arrogant ways and you can easily see this in some big city folks. :-(

How can we expect the non-Muslims to like or respect us Muslims?

Now, take a look at this particular Muslim community located in Hayward, California. Their Islamic brotherhood was so strong and so visible that the non-Muslims living around them felt really comfortable about Islam. Some of the non-Muslims have even converted to Islam due to their confidence in the brotherhood of Islam that this Muslim community has shown to them. The Muslim community over there has shown that Islam truly is a religion of peace. Alhamdulillah…

We should be ashamed of ourselves. Why can’t we be more like them?

Hi Saidul A Shaari,

Nice post and giving us some hope that not all Malays are hookwinked by the kind of dirty politics going on in our country.

Just curious. I did some check on "Saidul" in Google and sort of came to a conclusion that Saidul is a masculine name. Is that correct? If so, then why is this blog titled "Malay Women in Malaysia"?
