I could not help but laugh when I read today’s edition of NSTOnline. One of their many stories mentioned something about the retirement of the infamous Chief Justice Tun Ahmad Fairuz yesterday.
Check out what they have said about Tun Ahmad Fairuz’s request for a six-month extension down below:
“He had applied to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in July for a six-month extension but at press time, it was unclear if he had received it.”
Wasn’t that priceless? :-)
They are being too nice towards Tun Ahmad Fairuz.
Well, what can we expect from one of the government’s many ‘official’ drum-beaters anyway? :-)
Carolyn Hong of the Straits Times however is much more honest and direct. She said:
“It is believed that his request for extension has not received the approval of the King, which is required under the Malaysian Constitution.”You can read the full text of Carolyn Hong’s story at MalaysianBar Dot Org. Don’t bother to look for the story over at their Straits Times’s website. Their news is for paid subscribers only.
The StarOnline then put me in stitches with their silly report. I wonder if they know anything about our Constitution. Check out what they have said down below:
“It has been reported that the Rulers can make their recommendations on the appointment of the Chief Justice but the Prime Minister would have the final say on who should hold the position.”
StarOnline, what are you folks trying to do? Fool Malaysians?
The Prime Minister is not supreme here in Malaysia. You folks should be ashamed of yourselves for trying to falsely indicate to all Malaysians that the Prime Minister is so damn powerful. Let me remind you folks over at the StarOnline about what our Constitution have clearly stated about the powers and privileges of our Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Prime Minister:
"Article number: 122b
122B.
l (1) The Lord President of the Supreme Court, and chief justices of the High Courts and (subject to Article 122C) the other judges of the Supreme Court and of the High Court shall be appointed by the Yang di- Pertuan Agong, acting on the advice of the Prime Minister, after consulting the Conference of Rulers."
The Prime Minister can only exercise persuasion and coaxing. The keyword here is that our Yang di-Pertuan Agong has the final say!
You folks over at the StarOnline should remove that lame statement immediately. :-(
By the way, I really do hope that MalaysiaKini, HarakahDaily and Malaysia Today would send their people to cover the Conference of Rulers today. We are all anxious to hear the outcome of the Conference. Give us some juicy updates as soon as possible.
