That was a good speech, Tun Salleh Abbas!

Folks!

I really enjoyed Tun Salleh Abbas’s speech earlier today. Tun Salleh Abbas (along with two other Supreme Court judges) who was sacked under dubious circumstances in 1988 (Guess who was the so called great Malaysian Prime Minister back then? :-( ) gave a powerful speech in a forum organized by IKD or Institute of Policy Research recently. I really like Tun Salleh Abbas’s comment on the state of our judiciary today. Let me quote it for you readers out there:
“If by definition a judiciary means an independent, incorruptible and neutral judiciary – then I can say we don't have one, no,”

No surprise there! We all know it nowadays!

Tun Salleh Abbas even gave us five good tips on how we could restore our rotting and stinking judiciary back to their glory days:

1. Setting up a judicial commission on appointments and promotions of judges
2. Restore the vesting of judicial authority clause into the constitution to give power back to the courts
3. Tenure of office of judges should be fixed so that they do not feel afraid of making decisions eg judicial commissioners given a two year contracts are incapable of performing independently because they are subject to promotion or dismissal when the contract ends
4. Revise methods in removing judges should the judge be incapable of performing his or her legal duties or for health reasons
5. Protocol of judges must be looked into. Giving out of awards and honours to judges should be automatic when they hold certain positions

Well folks, as long as UMNO and Barisan Nasional are still in power, don’t expect them to follow Tun Salleh Abbas’s recommendations. We have to banish them first in the next general election. Only then we could do something about our judiciary. We could do so much more really.

Say no to ‘Dacing’! ‘Dacing’ is bad for your health!

By the way folks, please go and read this one great article written by Mr. Yeo Yang Poh last year. Mr. Yeo Yang Poh served as the Malaysian Bar Council’s President from 2005 to 2007. We should never forget our past fallen heroes that had purposely been put through hell by the powers that be just because they did something ethically right!
