MEDIA STATEMENT (1)
30-11-2007

HINDRAF INTERNATIONAL LOBBY

Hindraf Chairman and Barrister at Law (Lincoln’s Inn) Mr.P.Waythamoorthy had on 28/11/07 left Malaysia in light of the local crackdown and threatened (by the Prime Minister) detention without trial under the draconian Internal Security Act (ISA) and to lobby the international community’s support for the mere 8% ethnic minority Indians in Malaysia who have been marginalized and permanently colonialised by the racist, malay supremacist and Islamic fundamentalist UMNO controlled Malaysian Government. This is as a last resort as the said UMNO led Malaysian government, the Prime Minister, Ministers and Deputy Ministers are going all out on a crackdown on peaceful and lawful Hindraf supporters and their lawyers. The UMNO controlled print and electronic media are publishing and broadcasting almost daily over the past two(2) weeks and mostly on their headlines false, racial and religious hatred news against Hindraf. But they would not be prosecuted for Sedition unlike what they have already done to the three (3) Hindraf lawyers as they control the Attorney General, Courts, police, army, civil servants and the entire government machinery.

INDIA LOBBY

Mr.P.Waythamoorthy is expected to meet Tamil Nadu Chief Minister The Hon Mr.M.Karunanidhi and Opposition Leader Selvi Jayalalitha soon. Thereafter he would proceed to New Dehli with the view to meet the Prime Minister of India The Hon Mr.Manmohan Singh’s Senior Private Secretary and also the Indian Foreign Minister.

LONDON LOBBY

Mr.P.Waythamoorthy would thereafter proceed to London and meet the Malaysian desk officer at the Foreign and Commonwealth office of the British Foreign Ministry.

Thereafter he would try and meet the British Prime Minister, The Rt Hon Gardon Brown’s Senior Private Secretary. Meetings are also being arranged with Amnesty International London Interrights, Frontline Defenders, Dublin, and about 18 other human rights NGOS’ in London.

U.N / GENEVA / EUROPE

Thereafter Mr.P.Waythamoorthy would proceed to the office of the United Nations (U.N) High Commissioner for Human Rights and the other U.N bodies in Geneva and lodge a formal complaint against Malaysia for it’s 50 years of atrocities against the ethnic minority Indians in Malaysia. Thereafter he is expected to meet up with about 22 human rights NGOS’ in Geneva Brussells and other cities in Europe.

Thereafter Mr.P.Wathyamoorthy is flying to Washington to meet the U.S State Department Malaysia desk officer, U.S Congressman and Senators Secretaries, Human Rights Watch and about 20 other NGOS’ in Washington and New York.
In all the above destinations Mr.P.Wythamoorthy is also expected to lobby the Bar Associations in Madras, New Delhi, London, Geneva, Brussels, Washington and New York etc against especially the three (3) Hindraf lawyers for speaking up the truth but are maliciously prosecuted for Sedition and also the malicious assault, beat up, racist and malicious prosecution, harassment and intimidation of the 200 over hindraf peaceful assemblers who were merely exercising constitutional rights further to Article 10 of the Federal Constitution.

Thank You,
Yours Faithfully

P. Uthayakumar
Legal Adviser”

They are really going all out, aren’t they?

Personally, I think that they have gone overboard. They shouldn’t have done this in the first place. Lobbying for international sympathy would only bring unnecessary pressure and attention not only to our beloved nation but also to HINDRAF in general. They still have other better options that they can use to seek justice. Look at BERSIH for an example. HINDRAF should have followed their cool footsteps instead of running 'amuck' in some other foreign countries.

I don’t like this at all and I’m sure that some other Malaysians feel the same way too. :-(

A nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people.

It is always easy for anyone to comment that what HINDRAF did was wrong and that another better approach should be resorted to. Try to show a little empathy here. Their temples are being demolished, those under police detention seemed to be badly treated, poverty seemed to be part of their lives, and the party that claimed to represent them is nothing but a showpiece. I guess the last straw is when the SIL of the PM make a remark during the recent UMNO general assembly that the Tamil newspapers did not show any respect to the PM by not printing his speech. How could this be done when it was Deepavali and a public holiday, and many of the newsvendors are Indians. What if MIC had held their AGM on Hari Raya day? Hell would have broken lose, I am sure. So, please show some empathy here.

It is sad the way things are progressing. But I don't blame them for having a siege mentality.

Look at how the authorities are handling it. Every day bang, bang, bang. Every day taruh. Threaten with ISA. No attempt at reconcilliation. Ask the discredited MIC to solve the problem lol.

And then, dispatch the ridicoulous and rudely obnoxious Nazri to :
a. declare 20 or 30 thousand clerks and civil servants and lawyers and taxi drivers to be crooks .
b. turn an expected expression of concern into a full-fledged diplomatic incident. Cakap ikut nafsu.

1) ...Their temples are being demolished, those under police detention seemed to be badly treated, poverty seemed to be part of their lives...

Doesn't the above apply to Malays too, not just Indians?

2) I support HINDRAF's right to express their grieviences. However by going around the world as mentioned will only strengthened UMNO. UMNO will used it to rally the Malays, esp. those in the rural areas. They will play the racial card. HINDRAF is helping to ensure that the current regime continues. It is doing a disservice to all of us who oppose BN-UMNO.

The oppression & suppression started by the UMNO regime during TDM's era has become even more outrages since the present PM took office. One can draw parallel between concept of South Africa's apartheid "white supremacy" and "ketuanan Melayu" that the UMNO regime relentlessly championed. I would think ordinary Malays don't really care 2 hoots about the idea while struggling to make ends meet by taking 3 or 4 jobs between husband and wife just to feed the family.
As the country's wealth continue to be plundered and the masses, minority and the vast majority of Malays alike, feel more alienated by the ruling elite. Their rights continued to be tramped.
What HINDRAF's action should be viewed as an effort to highlight the struggle for not only the Indian minority but the to a larger extend of the whole population whose right has been rapidly washed down to the drain by the ruling elite.
In the above context, HINDRAF should get support from all the people whose right is being tramped upon irrespective of race. Malays, Chinese, Indians, Dayaks, Ibans, Kandazans etc etc must unite and stand up to the regime and say enough is enough.
People of resource rich east Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak must ask for a review of the agreement and conditions for joining Malaysia and seek redress if the agreement has been breach to the extend of reverting to the British and international rights community if it proves too futile an exercise to seek redress internally.
All the people must unite to dispel any action by the Government to spin the whole movement to make it look racial and pits one race with another.
For this I view the efforts HINDRAF's effort is a sacred one in the context of democratic rights of all citizens.
