X-Bugs? Genetically modified mosquitoes? Barisan Nasional playing God?

I was really surprised when I first read about this yesterday. I didn’t know that Malaysia is playing with God’s creations to such extent!

I wonder what would be next. Genetically modified pigs that look cute and adorable?

Anyhow, there is nothing wrong with genetic engineering in Islam if we go by the following Fatwa issued on the 17th of September 2006 by IslamWeb Dot Net. I do like to ask the government one thing though, can they guarantee that those genetically modified mosquitoes would not affect our living hood, environment and ecosystem in some other mysterious ways?
There is no religious prohibition for using artificial insemination or what is called genetic engineering in plants and animals eugenics, if this does not lead to any harm. The Islamic Fiqh Committee in its fifth conference passed a resolution about genetic engineering. The sixth article of this resolution reads: "It is permissible to use the instruments of genetic engineering and its means in animal reproduction and breeding, on the condition of taking all the precautions in order to prevent any harm on the person, animal or environment, even if that is on the long run."

After mentioning the situations where it is possible to use genetic engineering, one researcher clarified that it is a condition that this method should be safe from any change which causes misuse or leads to anything which is of no benefit, like making wings of an eagle for a hen, or making some limbs for some animals which originally do not have these limbs. He said: "Such alterations and changes neither lead to any benefit nor repel any harm, rather they just lead to the loss of money and effort."

Finally, it should be noted that Islam encourages acquiring knowledge and benefiting from the universal laws set by Allaah for His Creation in a way which achieves a benefit or repels harm, on the condition that this does not contract Allaah's Laws.

I personally don't think genetically altering natural insects is a good idea, you never really know what type of ripple effect that might have on other species and the environment. I would propose better prevention methods to control mosquitoes, like mosquito traps. http://www.mosquitomagnet.com makes a number of different models that work wonderfully at controlling mosquitoes. They are both safe and effective, why risk genetic modification?
