Makkal Osai suspended for a month!

Today, the Malaysian government has slapped a well known local Tamil newspaper Makkal Osai with a one month suspension for publishing a cartoon that gave a very appalling portrayal of Prophet Isa (Jesus) (pbuh). :-( Their cartoon has not only created tremendous uproars among the Malaysian Christians but also to the Malaysian Muslims. You can read more about this story from the StarOnline and MalaysiaKini.

It is comforting to see that the ruling government is quite sensitive to this sort of issue in the first place. However, I’m not too happy with the fact that they have not been really fair to Islam, the official religion of the nation. In the past, we have seen and read many news and article postings written in the newspapers and aired on the local television news channels that heavily criticized and condemned opinions and views voiced by our Ulamas and Muftis. Some of those news and article postings even insulted our Ulamas and Muftis.

Do you remember what had happened to the outspoken Perak Mufti Dato’ Seri Dr Hj Harussani Zakaria?

How come they were not taking any sort of actions against those who published such insulting news and articles? :-(

Assalam alaikum.

I am a Christian and I support the one month suspension of Makkal Osai as the Bible says "Render unto Caesar what belongs to Caesar". If Caesar (ie Malaysian government) decrees a one month ban I've to support it as the government is God's servant.

If I was Prime Minister of Malaysia, I'd have the editor of Makkal Osai detained under the Internal Security Act (I.S.A.) as he has insulted Christianity and Christians.

Hi,

I know John Lee personally and I am certain he's not the author of the comment above. Chances are the author is a notorious blog troll that has been active for a few years posting provocative and bigoted comments on blogs using the names of other bloggers who post social-political commentary.

Some background and context can be found from this article in The Cicak.

I'm a Christian and I forgive Makkal Osai after their apology. I do not agree to suspend them for 30 days. "An eye for en eye" is not what Jesus would want me to do. This is not love.

this johnleemk wannabe is totally clueless on this subject.

i am also a christian, and what this text means is that is we (christians) should give what we are due to the present day government (loyalty, taxes etc). you should read the next verse when the author say you (christians) are also give what is due to God which of course, more as we owe our lives and salvation to. basically the verse tells christians to be loyal to the country they are in and we lawful citizeens without neglecting God.

this being said, i am not offended by the caricature of 'jesus' and i think the whole episode to the month long ban is unwarranted and tips on the fringes of sillyness.

Don't simply make a small issue like this into a big one lah.........I don't see anything so very wrong in it. Remember what's happening to our national anthem rap song sung by Wee from Taiwan? Our so call National anthem is not our original too, it was stollen, borrowed or who knows what. There you go,this is what happens when people start to make an ant hill into a mountain. A song sung by a westerner with such a melodies hawaiian music titled " MAMULA MOON " I feel very sad and dissapointed and cheated for 48 years by our government to make me believe that this love song is our national anthem for which I would stand at attention any where if I am on foot.
