It is a gallant effort by both MTUC and CUEPACS but would it be effective?
There’s nothing wrong with MTUC’s and CUEPAC’s decisions to hold a protest or picket tomorrow. I got nothing against that. It’s the boycotting idea that I have some problems with.
Malaysians have been boycotting stuffs ever since the 1950s. Back then, surprisingly our boycotts made history and achieved considerable results. That was then but nowadays, Malaysian boycotts achieved nothing! :-(
Some times I do wonder whether Malaysians today truly understand what boycotting is really all about. Don’t just say that you want to boycott something, do it in actual sense. Our biggest Malaysian consumer group inarguably came from the Malaysian Malay (Melayu) community and this is where the problem really lies. I’m sorry to say that the Malaysian Malay consumers are probably the dumbest consumer group in the country. I had seen many Malaysian Malays who said that they wanted to boycott this and that but after a few days, they would soon start buying back all those stuffs that they were supposed to boycott! What the hell! ‘Cakap tak serupa bikin!’ :-(
No wonder our Malaysian Pharaohs laughed whenever they hear Malaysians want to boycott something.
If MTUC and CUEPACS really want to achieve results of some sort on their future campaigns, they would have to educate the Malaysian public first on the true meaning and objective of boycotting. Else, all their efforts would go down the drain and our Malaysian Pharaohs would reign supreme once again.
